A Study of Air Quality in Seoul

Abstract
Air pollutants were measured to get useful data in preventing and controlling the pollution at industrial, semiindustrial, commercial, park, crossroad and residential areas in Seoul from March to July, 1971.
Tested. were dustfalls, suspended particulates, sulfuric anhydride, sulfur dioxide, and relation between the polloution and meteriological factors was discussed.
Main findings were summarized as follows:
I. the highest amount of dustfalls of 35.2 tons/km2/m was measured in April while the lowest of 27.3 in July and near crossroad areas the highest amount of dusts of 48.0 fell while the lowest of 18.9 in park areas,
2. the highest concentration of sulfuric anhydride of 2.98 mg/d/100cm2 PbO2 was detected in March while the lowest of 2.46 in June and near crossroad areas the highest of 3.28 while in residential the lowest of 1.93.
3. dusts fell more with the increase of relative humidity, the amount of cloud, precipitation and with the decrease of sunshine, but meteriological factors did not effect on the amount of sulfuric anhydride.
4. the highest amount of suspended particulates of 1.92 mg/m3 of air was detected on Sunday in residential areas while those of 2.30 near crossroad and 1.50 in industrial areas respectively on Wednesday and mean particulates for a week were 1. 92 near crossroad, 1. 15 in residential areas and 0. 96 in industrial areas.
5. on Tuesday the highest amount of sulfur dioxide of 0.090 ppm was detected while on Wednesday the highest of 0. 120 and 0. 100 near crossroad and in industrial areas respectively.
6. the highest amount of nitrogen dioxide was 1. 775 ppm on Sunday in residential areas, 1. 207 on Tuesday near crossroad and 1.775 on Monday in industrial areas.
7. high suspended particulates were detected at 7-13 o¢¥clock (0.90 mg/m3 of air) and 19-21(1.08) in residential areas, at 5-11 (3.30) and 21-23(2.34) near crossroad, and at 5-7(2.34) and 17-19(2.46) in
` industrial areas. and daily two-peak periods concurred with those of temperature inversion of air.
8. high sulfur dioxide was detected at 3-5 o¢¥clock(0.057 ppm) and 17-19(0.104) in residential areas, and 7-9(0.200) near crossroad, but no high peak was found in industrial areas.
9. the highest nitrogen dioxide was detected at 14 o¢¥clock (0. 994 ppm5, at 16(1, 5625 near crossro6d, and at 12(1.775) in industrial areas.
